Understanding the Andalusian horse market place ...

Analysis of the 2007 Summer Market

by Donna DeYoung, Pure Spanish (PRE) Andalusian Horse Breeder

picture of andalusian horseHorses on the Andalusian market can be categorized according to age, sex, breeding/bloodlines, and color. I have grouped two and three year olds together. Young mares fall into the group of 4, 5, 6, and 7. Aged mares are over 8. So few aged stallions were offered that I grouped everything that was 5 or over. Geldings were all grouped together regardless of age.

Bloodlines were analyzed according to whether the horse was advertised as “pure Spanish” (PRE) and revised, or eligible for inscription/revision. Horses listed as “IALHA” are assumed not to be eligible for inscription/revision or at least the seller does not follow the program. SP horses are those that are a cross between Spanish and Portuguese bloodlines. Although not always advertised, these lines can be recognized by Adalid, Sagres, Despierto, TG, or other markers.

Bloodlines were also analyzed by their pedigree. Certain lines are obviously bred in American for several generations – i.e. Garrison lines and descendents of early imports. Other lines are recent imports from Spain (first or second generation) from well-known modern PRE breeders.

The total number of horses analyzed was 144. The data came from an on-line search engine of horse classified ads that have been placed in the last few months (since May) and include photos and prices. Horses for sale by private treaty were excluded.

As can be seen by the total percent, weanling colts and fillies and aged mares offer the most choices. The average price increases with age with the exception of aged mares which are offered for less (due to shortened reproductive life and decreased soundness overall).

Prices of PREs are almost always higher than IALHA horses and SP horses.

A few exceptions occurred for show/trained animals and or unusual colors. The price of bays is sometimes higher than greys and blacks are almost always the more expensive animal.

Weanling Andalusian Fillies for Sale

The weanling filly market is a popular market for those looking to getting into breeding. Although many breeders “hold back” their best fillies from year to year, many are made available for newcomers. The price for a filly increases about $4,000 by the time she is a yearling and can be twice as high for a PRE two or three year old.

The PRE fillies had the higher average cost, as did bays. SPs were considerably cheaper. Of the purebred Spanish weanling fillies, only 2 of the 8 were from pure/recent imported lineage. Three were a mixture of American lines and imports, and 2 were straight American lines. Thus, the desirable PRE horse of imported lineage amounted to only 10% of the offerings. The second-most desirable (PRE horses of imported/American lineage) amounted to 20% of the offerings.

The highest price weanling fillies were a bay PRE of America/imported lines for $18,000 and a bay IALHA-registered filly of American/imported lines. The four lowest-priced fillies were the 2 SPs, a bay IALHA American-bred filly, and a grey IALHA American-bred filly. The four highest-priced fillies were all bays of American/imported lines.

Weanling Andalusian Colts for Sale

The weanling colt market is rather competitive as many breeders opt to sell all their colts. There were slightly more colts than fillies for sale and about half the colts could be purchased for $10,000 or less. The average price of colts was similar to weanling fillies. The prices ranged all over the board regardless of whether the horses were SP, IALHA, or PRE. The reason may be that colts are priced to sell so that the owner does not have to keep colts/stallions on the property.

Yearling Andalusian Fillies for Sale

The yearling filly market closely follows the weanling market with a slightly higher price and some fillies priced much higher (perhaps their potential is being realized). Bay yearling fillies were those priced highest – often doubling in price by the time they are breeding age. The yearling market is difficult as horses are gawky at this age and many have already been moved on to buyers.

Yearling Andalusian Colts for Sale

The yearling colt price is approximately $3,000 more than the weanling price but $7,000 less than the two and three-year-old colt prices. Typically, the American IALHA lines were in the bottom half of price range, while the PRE colts of imported and American/imported lines were at the higher prices. The yearling colt average price is less than that for fillies. The IALHA lines seem to be rather cheap – perhaps reflecting a glut of these horses on the market.

Of the Spanish PRE yearlings for sale, almost all had imported lines. Of the American-bred IALHA horses, only one-third were imported lines. The least expensive yearlings were grey IALHA horses. The most expensive were horses with imported lines (PRE), and one bay IALHA horse. The bay horses were overall more expensive than greys; also the PREs were more expensive than IALHA horses.

Two and Three Year Old Andalusian Fillies for Sale

This is an excellent age at which to purchase a filly if you can afford it. By now she is almost ready to breed and her conformation can be analyzed easily. The prices, though, in this market are twice the weanling price. Also, you will need to search quite a bit to find the quality you are wanting at a certain price. Beyond this age, the prices tend to begin a downward trend. I suspect that the better broodmares that are put into production are just never put on the market until they are much older.

Two and Three-Year-Old Andalusian Colts for Sale

This is a tricky age at which to purchase a stallion. If he has not had proper handling, you may have more of a challenge than you were wanting. Most people buying into this age will need to geld or obtain a full-time trainer. It is common in this breed not to geld because stallions retain their value much better than geldings. Again, the colt prices are cheaper than the filly prices. There is a variety of PRE, IALHA, and SP bloodlines to select from. The PRE prices were above average and the IALHA price was half of the average PRE price.

Young Andalusian Mares (4, 5, 6, and 7 years old) for Sale

So few mares of this age are on the market because they are in their prime reproductive years. A mare that has passed revision (Spanish inspection) greatly increases in value as her foals can be sold eligible for inscription. The prices on these horses were in order of type of breeding. For example, the SPs were the lowest priced, the IALHA horses in the middle, and all the PRE horses were the most expensive. The average price in this group was slightly lower than that for 2 and 3 year olds – however; odds are that these horses are not trained under saddle. Often they are offered in foal to the owner’s stallion as a “bonus” that does not cost the stallion owner anything.

Aged Andalusian Mares (8 and up)

You will begin to see mares offered up as their owners get out of the breeding business or as the mare gets older. Over half of the aged mares offered were trained, however most were of American breeding. Several were offered in foal.

Aged Andalusian Stallions

I grouped all stallions that were 4 and over because there were so few for sale! (only 5). Expect high prices for trained and imported stallions, revised stallions, etc. This group had the highest average price ($32,600) of all Andalusians for sale.

Andalusian Geldings

Most geldings are sold as trained and have an average price of $22,300. This is due to their rarity and also value to their owners.
